FEMINIST VISUALITIES, a conference at Cornell University February 2-3, 2007 will bring together artists, art historians, theorists and scholars from interdisciplinary areas who will address the critical issues of gender and identity in contemporary art practice and education.  How do artists today of all generations engage in a dialogue with contemporary visual culture while conceptually highlighting the self-conscious issues of feminism/gender as it relates to politics, national identity, etc. in their work?  How will these issues affect the future of Feminist Visualities in practice, critical theory and scholarship?

In this initiative Cornell University joins with museums, universities and institutions around the country as part of a network, The Feminist Art Project.” The mission of the project is to bring public attention to women’s significant impact on contemporary art practice, highlighting their international influence, and guaranteeing inclusion in the cultural record of the past, present, and future.  Additionally, the intention is to commemorate the historic anniversaries in the American Women’s Art Movement since the 1970’s and launch new initiatives to demonstrate the ongoing significance of women’s contributions to art.
