WHAT? Peer review = students read drafts of their classmates papers. WHY? Revision is ESSENTIAL for quality writing! But, as a teacher, reading multiple drafts is very time-consuming. If students review drafts, you save time PLUS students develop skills that will help them as readers and writers. HOW? Devote class time for reviewer training. Guide students by handing out a list of questions/issues reviewers should answer/respond to. Require students to type out their responses to lend formality to the occasion and collect and grade the reviews. MECHANICS? The simplest: have students swap papers with a partner the day the assignment is due. The following class meeting reviewers give authors their review with the original paper. The next class meeting students hand in their revised paper, the review they received, and their original paper. Your job will be to assess the whole packet. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS
