Volunteer for the Zeo Project
If you would like to volunteer to participate in "Putting Sleep to the Test: The Cornell Sleep Study"this is the time to sign up! This is a very exciting opportunity to be part of one of the largest student population sleep studies ever – and to improve your own sleep. Putting Sleep to the Test: The Cornell Sleep Study is going to test the effects of sleep education and coaching on sleep fitness. Participants will get the chance to use a Zeo – a Personal Sleep Coach that will monitor sleep patterns wirelessly and return personalized tips. For more information about the details of the research, click on the survey link below. This is a totally unique study, designed to: - Gain a better understanding of sleep in the college environment - Learn how sleep affects student performance (academic, social, or athletic, for example) - See how sleep education, specifically in this class, affects students’ sleep.
In exchange for your help, you will receive: - 1 point added to your final grade, the chance to use a Zeo for the semester, and to win some prizes along the way - A better understanding of your own sleep habits, and hopefully an improved sense of alertness and well-being by the end of the semester! You cannot earn credit for both the Zeo study and for a SUSAN experiment or BUDDY BYTES. Just pick any one or none.
Apply to the Zeo Project by filling out this survey by midnight tonight:

Welcome to Psych 1101! The course begins at 10:10am on Friday August 28th in Bailey Hall.
You should immediately read the "General Information" section on this website, or in the "Psychology 101 Frontiers of Psychology" manual, available from the Cornell Store. It explains all couse policies regarding attendance, exams, grading and subject pool participation. (The information on this website superceeds that published in the Frontiers book.)
HELPFUL HINTS FOR EFFECTIVE READING
Make sure you begin reading-- assignments
are due on the date marked in the box on the syllabus. Use
the Psychology Study Guide "Module Overview" before reading each
assignment to ascertain learning objectives. Follow "Stepping Through the
Section" as you are reading and then, after reading, do the"Progress
Test." That way you'll know what's important, and if you have assimilated
the material. Just before each exam, review the multiple choice items. A
number of exam questions will be drawn from these quizzes.
Our textbook publisher maintains an excellent
set of resources for helping you understand and retain the information in
the textbook. PsychPortal is
THE KEY to success in passing the course exams.
To gain access to the site, read the instructions by clicking here.
You will be prompted to follow the on-screen
instructions to find Psych 101. Start by selecting New York, Cornell, then
Maas and Psych 101. Enter your activation code you purchased with your textbook.
You will also be asked to enter your email address and choose a password.
You can also purchase access on the website by clicking on the “PURCHASE”
link.
The Student User Guide to PsychPortal can be accessed by clicking here.
LECTURE
ATTENDANCE
All seats are assigned for the semester at the second lecture. Attendance
is taken every lecture at 10:10am. The downstairs auditorium doors will
close at that time and nobody will be admitted after that time. If for any
reason you arrive late or must leave early, sit in the designated area in
the balcony (CCC 104-110); nobody will be permitted to leave the downstairs
floor once the lecture has started. If you are late in arriving, even if
you sit in the balcony, you will be marked as absent. We reward punctuality.
If you have an official university excuse (medical or athletic) for missing a lecture, show that to your own tutor so you don't get marked absent! I do not handle those requests-- only your tutor in your seating area has the official records. If you attend all lectures but two (2), and are in your seat on time every lecture, you will receive 2 points additional credit on your final grade calculation. Only university sanctioned absences (athletic trips or Gannett written medical excuses) can count as excused absenses. Weddings, funerals and job interviews are not excused absenses. If you miss 5 lectures your seat will be reassigned.
If you do miss a lecture make sure that you listen to the audio tapes in Uris Library. Video tapes of slides and films are not available. Visit a tutor in Uris G-94 or the Takon Center for additional support and information on the material you missed.
NO CLASS: Sept. 28th (Yom Kippur) and October 9th
EXAMS: Prelim 1 (in class) Monday, October
5th,
Prelim 2 (in class) Monday, November 9th.
FINAL EXAM: DECEMBER 11TH, 2pm
NO MAKEUPS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANY PRELIM.
One (1) point of additional credit is given for a total of one hour participation in the SUSAN research program before November 30th, on a limited first come first served basis.
Bring me some good CDs to play before and after lecture! Write your name and email address on the CD cover.
