Acer palmatum cv. Bloodgood (Japaneses Maple). Japanese maple
is moderately difficult to root, so some grower graft it to A. palmatum
seedling understocks. This usually involves a side veneer graft performed
in the greenhouse during the winter. There are many other A. palmatum
cultivars in additon to Bloodgood which are also clonally propagated
by grafting.
The scion shown here is grafted at the base of the understock, but in some
cases larger multiple scions
are top grafted onto larger stock plants, resulting in a saleable plant
in less time.
