In the current climate of the European Union, there has been a significant focus on the importance of a European collective identity. Although the EU has created an unprecedented degree of cooperation among European nations, the influence of nationalism and national identity remains a force to be reckoned with. Food is an integral part of most national identities, and the influence of new EU regulations has caused conflicts over this issue in several regions. Overall, it is clear that food is inextricably linked with national identity, and thus debates over national foods must be respectfully resolved in order to maintain European unity. Our topics seek to examine specific regions of Europe and the interactions between food and national identity. In doing so, we hope to provide greater insight into the complex nature of national and supra-national identities within Europe.
