Bryan Danforth is an Associate Professor in the Department of Entomology. My office is located in 3124 Comstock Hall. My research focuses on the evolution, behavior, phylogeny, and diversification of the bees. There are over 16,000 species of bees in the world and they are diverse in morphology, ecology and life history. In my lab we use both morphological data as well as DNA sequence data to reconstruct the evolutionary history of bees. These studies are shedding light on the early evolutionary history of bees, their host-plant evolution, and their historical biogeography. My research takes me to diverse habitats in the southern Hemisphere. In the past few years I have visited Madagascar, South Africa, Australia and the arid regions of western North America. I love field work and the opportunity to travel. Being an entomologist is a great job!
I have taught Alien Empire five times before (1998, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008). Other members of the Entomology department (Dr. John Sanderson and Dr. John Losey) have also taught the course. We hope to offer the course every Spring semester starting in Spring, 2006.
