Insect Invaders (Fire Ants, etc.)

In two lectures we will examine the impact, both ecologically and economically, of several insects that have been transported by accident to areas outside their native ranges. These introduced or “exotic” insects can have devastating effects in some cases. Fire ants, for example, are estimated to cost several billion dollars a year to federal, state and municipal governments. More recent introductions, such as the Asian long-horned beetle, are already having an enormous impact in NY state and across the country. We will examine the history and ecology of several insect invaders and a guest lecture by Richard Hoebeke (Department of Entomology) on the Asian long-horned beetle will give you a first-hand look at the ongoing battle against insect invaders.
