Insect Development
Some insects undergo rapid and remarkable developmental transformations during the transition from larval to adult form. The mechanisms controlling these transformations are well known in insects and involve a cascade of gene actions during embryonic development and a complex network of hormone interactions during post-embryonic development. We will examine how insect development is controlled and how it has changed over the course of insect evolution. We will also examine some of the more bizarre forms of insect reproduction, such as parthenogenesis and insects that eat their mothers.
