| Some companies, more than others, have the ability to strive with the implementation of remote work. How compatible a company is with telecommuting has to do with the characteristics of the work they do and their workforce. A survey done in Europe outlines these characteristics.
In terms of age, workers aged 15-29 had the highest interest in telecommuting. This includes younger employees, who seek the freedom to work wherever they wish and have the most understanding of the latest technology16, and parents with younger children, who have the added |
responsibility of a child. Remote work gives those parents the opportunity to work and care for a sick child if necessary.
Jobs in information technology, data processing, science, engineering, journalism, consulting, and secretarial work all have an affinity to remote work. These are professions that each employee can work on their own and take advantage of communication devices to stay in touch with the rest of the workforce. Households with either one or two people or those with more than four people have |
the greatest interest in remote work. Three person households showed the least interest. Remote work seems to appeal to those who either do not have children or to those who have a large family.
There is little to no relationship between occupational status, full or part time, and affinity to remote work. The size of the company also did make a difference in an employee’s wish to telework. |
