Star Trek vs. Star Wars
4/20/97
Newton Liu & Christopher Jew
Plot:
Through some freak occurrence in the time-space continuum, the Klingons and the Rebels have been juxtaposed, so now the Klingons must fight to break free from the Empire. A Tie Interceptor patrol stumbles across a single Bird of Prey and try to lure it back to the Death Star…
Models:
The Klingon Bird of Prey was hierarchically modeled using a combination of quadric surfaces and vertices/face lists. The wings were created using lists because it was too hard to define triangular shapes using quadric surfaces. The same goes for the base of the neck, and the thruster. The neck is simply three cylinders- one big and two smaller ones off its sides. The head consists of three scaled ellipsoids, one of which is the window. The window does not seem like ellipsoid because the other two ellipsoids cover all but a narrow portion of that ellipsoid.
The thrust trail of the Bird of Prey is a hierarchical combination of four flat boxes, each changing color as a function of opacity and rotating at its own speed (when they rotate).
The proton torpedoes were made by concatenating six cones that were rotated to make the ends touching.
The Death Star is a parametric sphere that curves inward after a certain height to create the indentation of the laser dish. A paraboloid was put on top of this indentation to make it more smooth. A short cylinder was put around the Death Star to make the hanger area.
The laser beam of the Death Star is just one semi-transparent yellow cylinder placed inside a larger semi-transparent green cylinder.
The wing panels on the Tie Interceptor were created using vertices/face lists. The cockpit ball is a simple sphere while the cockpit window is a smaller wire framed sphere slightly offset from the center of the main cockpit ball. The wing-to-cockpit connector is a solid of revolution with the radius as a function of x. The thrusters and lasers are squashed spheres. To make the actual laser beams, two cylinders were created and the glyph module was used to place the cylinders along the path of the laser beam.
The space background was created with Adobe Photoshop by painting small white dots on a black background.
Methods:
The cloaking effect of the Bird of Preys was achieved by making the ship more and more opaque as the ship was multiplied by a matrix that randomly distorts its y-component. The matrix would approach the identity matrix as time increased so that the ship would look like the original ship after a period of time.
The shield was an ellipsoid modeled to fit the entire Bird of Prey. The opacity was a function of time to allow the shield to become visible when it was fired upon. Cellular automata was mapped onto the shield’s color map to simulate the laser beam being absorbed by the shield.
All explosions were created by taking the isosurfaced rendered cloud from Lab 12 and scaled to the proper size to fit the exploding objects. The opacity for each explosion increased and decreased according to time to give the effect of a dissipating explosion. For the Death Star explosion, an addition torus was created to further enhance its destruction. The torus’s cross sectional radius remained constant while the torus radius increased with respect to time.
