The Comic Theatre
Monday-Wednesday-Friday, 12:20-1:15, Kaufmann Auditorium, Spring 2006

The origins of comic drama in ancient Greece and Rome, and its
subsequent incarnations especially in the Italian renaissance (Commedia erudita
and Commedia dell' arte), Elizabethan England, 17th-century France, the English
Restoration , and Hollywood in the 30's and 40's. Chief topics will be 1)
the growth of the comic theatrical tradition and conventions; 2) techniques
and themes of comic plots (trickster, parody, farce, caricature); 3) the role
of comedy in society: is it disruptive or unifying? Insightful or malicious?
When is censorship necessary?
