Course Grades:

Course grades will be based on homeworks, two prelims, a final exam and two projects as follows:

 

7 homework assignments (lowest grade dropped)	25%
2 Prelims (15% each)	30%
Final Exam	25%
2 Projects (10% each)	20%

 

Based on your performance on the above assignments, your final grade will be determined according to the following grid:

D	63.00 - 66.99
D-	60.00 - 62.99
F	0.00 - 59.99

 

Challenge Problems:

Completion of at least four of the challenge problems at a grade of 7 out of 10 or higher will raise your course grade by one step (e.g., B+ to A- or A to A+).
 

Having a predetermined grading scale (rather than subjectively or comparatively determined) means that you can tell exactly how well you are doing in class. It also means that you are not in competition with the other students. Your grade is based solely on your performance.
 

Regrades:

Grading errors on homeworks should be brought to the attention of your TA within 2 weeks of the date on which it was returned. Your failure to pick up your homework does not extend this deadline, unless the cause was a lengthy medical or family emergency, in which case you need to contact Steve Seiferheld.
