Prerequisites
One calculus course.
(but I am prepared to review math as we need it).

Familiarity with Neurobiology at the level of BioNB 222 is useful because many examples will based on real biological systems.

Purpose
The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with electronic design and to enable students to build electronic instruments for biological use.

Course Work
There will be approximately weekly lab assignments and a final project.

The course grade will be calculated as follows:

• 50% for labratory assignments.
  • This is a small class. I will be watching all of you work each week. Lab grade will be determined by how ready you are for lab, how much you get done, and how well you retain what you have learned. There will be no required written assignments, but there will be suggested homework and lab related questions for you to answer and think about. I, of course, could ask you any of these in lab. You will need to keep good enough notes so that you can apply your lab experience to the final project. I expect there to be a wide range of backgrounds in this course. Grading will be relative to each student's background in electronics.
• 50% for the final project .
  • The final project will be an electronic construction project that each group will define and build. There will be a required demonstration of the project and a required web page describing the project. I understand that people come into this course with quite varied backgounds. If you are an electrical engineering student, you should be prepared to do a more elaborate final project than if someone who has never touched a wire.

Laboratory Policies

You are expected to attend the lab period every week. If you have a compelling (academic) reason why you cannot attend, there will be makeup time.

You are expected to be familiar with the assignment before coming to lab. Most of your lab grade depends upon being prepared, and on the quality, quantity and character of the work done during the lab period.

Lab work will be in groups of 2. Both members are expected to become proficient with all aspects of the lab.

N.B. You should keep all of your work backed up on either
3-1/2 diskettes, writable CD-ROM, or a flash drive.
