The images presented here are similar to those that are found in the
Johnson Museum's albums for the Tale of Genji, but the ones here are primarily from
"The Picture Scroll of the Tale of Genji" located at the Tokugawa Museum,
"The Picture Quire of the Tale of Genji" located at the Kyoto National Museum,
"The Picture Screen of the Tale of Genji" located at Ishiyama Temple, and
various screens from the Tokyo National Museum.
The images here are more pleasant to view, in my opinion, than those
images that were scanned in by the Johnson Museum. Though the leaves portrayed on the
Johnson Museum's page are very beautiful and striking, the picture quality is not as good
as it could be. The images here are extracted from the Tale of Genji CD-ROM and are
typically of better image quality and are of screens that are comparable in beauty and in
artistry as those presented by the Johnson Museum. Additionally, these images are
not otherwise available in on-line form (as far as I know) and I present them here in a
convenient and easy to use format for others to view.
Unfortunately, the CD-ROM does not provide more than the name of the
chapter when describing each scene. However, the design of this web page would allow
another project's web page to be linked by this one. For example, if a student
wanted to read more about the Aoi chapter, and there are further web resources on it, a
slight modification to the HTML would allow a student to click a link from the Aoi image.
One can view these images as a "slide show" by using the next
and previous buttons on the bottom frame, or one may skip to specific frames by clicking
on the chapter name in the frame on the left. To return to this screen, click on the
Tale of Genji icon.
Since the images for the picture scroll were not readily available as files in a
popular graphics format on the CD-ROM, extracting the images involved taking screen
captures of each of the sixty-eight screens and taking these captures into an image editor
to crop, convert, and compress to produce images suitable for display over the World Wide
Web.
The background image is taken from a long forgotten source. The Tale of Genji
images are taken from the Tale of Genji CD-ROM. Panda is from a Ranma 1/2 animation
cell. All other images are original. HTML/web design done using Microsoft
FrontPage.
