Old Announcements

Announcements for Final Week:

12/3: Remember to come to Rockefeller 230 this Friday (not to your section rooms) for a big final exam review session.

12/5: The final exam will take place on December 19th at 9:00 a.m. in Rockefeller 132. Good luck!!

12/9: Here are those old quizzes.

12/12: One last link, folks: we just discovered a very rich site called Muslim Scientists and Islamic Civilization. Take a look when you have a chance.

Announcements for Week 12:

11/17: The BikeAbout group is now in Cairo (apparently they were not shot on Monday). They'll be posting lots of pictures and notes from Egypt within the next few days, in sha'a allah.

11/18: Your writing assignment for Friday is now posted.

Announcements for Week 11:

11/10: Remember, there is no section this Friday (and no writing assignment). Instead, we'll meet at the Johnson Museum at 3:30 on Friday (or 10:00 on Saturday) for a tour of Islamic art. Please be on time; otherwise, you might have trouble finding the group.

In preparation for the tour--and in lieu of a writing assignment--please have a look at this remarkable display of Islamic Art on the web.

Another new item on our pages: images having to do with Islamic cities and urban design.

And since we've been looking at the Mediterranean region lately, you might like to check in on the BikeAbout: The Mediterranean site, which is continually being updated.

Announcements for Week 9:

10/27: Professor Seyyed Hossein Nasr is delivering lectures on Sufism (among other things) Monday-Thursday this week. Here is the schedule. Don't forget to attend one!

10/29: Your writing assignment for Friday is now on the web.

A tape of Professor Nasr's 10/28 lecture on "Islam and the Response to Modernism" is now on reserve in Uris library.

When you have time, check out the new links below.

Announcements for Week 5:

9/30: Your writing assignment for Friday (10/3) is now available.

Announcements for Week 4:

9/22: The course packet and the Tierney book containing this Friday's readings (on the Pirenne thesis) are both on reserve in Uris now.

There are also some new pages of captioned photos here for you--see the links below, under "New Items."

9/23: Your writing assignment for Friday (9/26) is now available.

Announcements for Week 3:

9/14: In case you want to get in touch with your classmates (highly encouraged!), I've put up a list of course members and their e-mail addresses, divided by section (use the Cornell student directory for phone numbers). The class list is password-protected for your privacy; check your e-mail for this top-secret information.

9/16: Your writing assignment for Friday's section is now available.

9/17: Anyone who would like a free copy of Yusuf Ali's translation of the Qur'an may request it from the Islamic Affairs Department of the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia (interesting website). Use their online information request form.

Announcements for Week 2:

9/9: Your writing assignment for Friday's section (9/12) is now up on the web, in case you want to get started.

Announcements for Week 1:

9/1: Happy Labor Day! If you're interested, you can take a look at this English translation of Hammurabi's Code of Laws (mentioned in today's lecture on pre-Islamic Middle Eastern societies). Later in the course, you may find it useful to compare this law code with Islamic law.

Don't forget to send us an e-mail message if you haven't already done so. Thanks!

9/4: There are still fifteen copies of Kennedy at the Campus Store. Ask a staff member for help if you can't find them.

The electronic mailing list for the class is up and running. If you haven't gotten a welcome message yet from ISLAM-L, please e-mail Jo so that she can add you to the list.

Islamic Art Display: Prof. Powers has arranged for the Art Museum to display its collection of illuminated Islamic manuscripts from Nov. 10-15. Also, he has reserved the teaching room in the Museum, where the art will be displayed, on Friday November 14 from 3:30 -5:00 p.m. and on Saturday Nov 15 from 10-11:30 (the room is not available during our course hours). Check your calendar and decide which of these two times is better for you. We'll pass around a sign-up sheet in section. Please note that the Museum visit will replace section that week (in other words, no section on Friday 11/14 at 12:20). The online syllabus reflects this change.
